With deep sadness the Officers and Members of Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, No. 1 announce the passing of Chief Emeritus, Walter R. Hurst. Chief Hurst passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.
Walt joined Brandywine Hundred Fire Company on June 2, 1954 and was an Honorary and Lifetime Active member with (66) years of service; noting that (64) of these years he responded to more than 25% of the sounded alarms.
During Walt's tenure at Brandywine Hundred Fire Co. he proudly held the positions of Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, 3rd Assistant Chief, Vice President, Board of Director and Fire Recorder. Walt also served on numerous committees and was instrumental with the addition and renovation of our building which was completed in 1998.
As an accomplished apparatus driver and firefighter Walt was a mentor to many, sharing his knowledge and wisdom throughout his volunteer career at Station 11.
In 2006 Walt was prestigiously honored and inducted into the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association Hall of Fame. On April 27, 2019 the unveiling of the Walter R. Hurst Memorial Award for Outstanding Dedication was created by the membership of Brandywine Hundred Fire Company as a salute to Walt's unwavering commitment to our fire company and volunteerism.
The Hurst family has more than "100" Years of Active Service at Brandywine Hundred Fire Company. Walt was proud to serve along side his late father Chief Emeritus H. Bentz Hurst, who had (50) active years and was a Charter Member, joining in 1924.
Walt was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran who served onboard the "supercarrier" USS Forrestal (CVA-59).
Walt's lifetime of dedication and devotion to Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, the community he so proudly served and the entire Delaware Fire / EMS service is a true testament of a great man who leaves behind a legacy of service which we will continue to honor.
As we send our condolences to the entire Hurst family we also thank you for sharing Walt with us for the past (66) years. Rest in Peace Chief.
