HAZ-MAT Accident on I-495

Sunday afternoon Rescue 11 (Rescue Captain, N. Turcol) with a crew of (4), Engine 11-5 (Assistant Chief A. Brown) with a crew of (5) along with A-11 responded to an mvc on I-495 southbound near the Edgemoor exit. Upon arrival crews found an UPS tractor trailer involving a car. Crews assessed both drivers and secured hazards as the fuel tank on the tractor trailer was damaged from the impact, causing diesel fuel to leak onto the roadway. Assistant Chief Brown requested responses from HAZMAT-30, DNREC and additional resources for traffic control. The rescue and engine crews were successfully able to contain the fuel run-off until the arrival of HAZMAT-30. Rescue 11 remained on scene until the remaining fuel was siphon from the diesel tanks and turned the scene over to HAZMAT-30, DNREC and the Delaware State Police. Fire Police remained on scene to assist with traffic control until all units cleared.
